The mining sector in South Africa contracted 9.3 percent in March, according to a research

Domestic mining production fell by 9.3% year on year in March 2022, according to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA).

Gold (-25.6 percent, providing -3.7 percentage points), iron ore (-24.4 percent, contributing -2.5 percentage points), manganese ore (-19.8 percent, giving -1.9 percentage points), and platinum group metals were the biggest negative contributions, according to StatsSA (-8.2 percent , contributing -1.9 percentage points).

Diamond production (44.3 percent, or 1.6 percentage points) was also a substantial positive contributor, according to the agency.

Seasonally adjusted mining production in South Africa climbed by 1.7 percent in March 2022 compared to February 2022, according to the data. This follows -6.0 percent month-over-month changes in February 2022 and 6.0 percent in January 2022.
